You may think of your home as your own, but not everyone out there may be under the same impression. No, we are not talking about robbers, looters, and squatters.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

But we are talking about are those cute fur-and-feather balls that like to trespass on our roofs every now and then like raccoons, squirrels, mice, rats, opossums and birds.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Let\u2019s face it, animals are always on the lookout for shelter, and human-made roofs make for prime real estate. Our homes offer protection from the elements, safety from predators, and a nice view from above.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

On the\u00a0flip side, they can wreak\u00a0havoc on our homes and our health and it\u2019s important to recognize the difference between damage from\u00a0Mother Nature and\u00a0damage from pesky critters.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cSo what?\u201d<\/em> you might be thinking. \u201cThat raccoon family up there is not bothering me.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

However, even if you are an animal lover, it\u2019s not a good idea to let rodents and birds colonize your home.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Animals generally find it easier to climb up than to climb down, which is why they might need a helping hand in getting off your property.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The first thing you need to do is try to assess if the animal is injured. If it seems to be in good health, get a long wooden plank or a ladder and prop it against the edge of the roof. Step back and leave some distance between you and the animal.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Therefore, if you suspect that the animal might not be in optimal health, call your local animal control and leave the job to the professionals.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
